Vivid Impressionists #2: Lupe Fiasco

The greatest rapper of all time that was never the greatest... Anybody that has the nerve to try and denounce what this man once was talent-wise is a fool, simple as that. A young rapper doesn't just come along and get Jay-Z wanting to sign him, turn down his offer with no second thought, then end up having him executive produce AND feature on his debut album.

Matter a fact, it wouldn't have even mattered whether or not the stars had literally aligned or not for Lupe like they did. He still would've been heard, and in a city like Chicago where hip-hop superstars such as Kanye West were reigning supreme, it was destined. All eyes were already on his city. Yes, I understand that Lupe's music isn't for everyone. He literally forces you to pay attention while listening to a song of his. He'll say a line like "It’s hard being a Lupe fan, go to Harvard to be a Lupe Stan" and have you thinking he's just being self-loathing, but that line is so truthful. You simply cannot listen to his songs without being prepared to think and analyze his verses bar for bar after first listen. This is exactly why he's my favorite rapper of all time. In an era of hip-hop music where dumbing it down is so of the norm, and almost every song you hear is literally for the moment and temporary, artists like Lupe are extremely appreciated by someone like myself. It's sad, because you'll always come across the majority that will look at a lyricist such as him and say he's "boring" all because he isn't rapping a dumbed down verse or chorus. Realness isn't for everybody, nor should it be expected from many... Mr. Fiasco's 5th studio album releases on January 10, 2015 via Atlantic Records. Below is the official cover art.

Vivid Impressionists #1: Pharrell Williams

Pharrell is a producer, singer, and rapper who single handedly changed urban music back in the early 2000s. Born on April 5, 1974, Pharrell was born and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia. As a seventh grader at band camp where he played the keyboards and drums, Pharrell would end up meeting his life long friend and producer mate Chad Hugo. Together, they would form the super producer duo called The Neptunes. After years and years of hard work, The Neptunes built a catalog that is second to none. Having done work with Justin Timberlake, Usher, and more, they are held as arguably the most successful urban producers of our generation. In addition to this, the two have earned three Grammies after being nominated ten times. Pharrell later would go on to found his own clothing brands named Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream Clothing, with the later being highly influential on the skateboarding culture. Currently, Pharrell has started up a new record label called I Am Other, replacing his old imprint Star Trak. Even more present, Pharrell currently has the number one song in the country with his single "Happy."

The man never ages... (2004-2013)

His hats seem to continue to grow in size...

(2004)

(2014)

But most importantly, his music continues to evolve...

Michael Jackson is Alive... Sort of.

At this Sunday's Billboard Music Awards, Michael Jackson returns. Did he ever really leave our minds, hearts, or headphones though? I for one can say he never left mine.

Appearing in the form of an extremely high-tech hologram, reminiscent of Tupac's at Coachella last year during Dr. Dre's headlining set, MJ will be performing track #5 off of his 2nd posthumous album, "Xscape." Titled "Slave to the Rhythm," this highly energetic dance track, produced by Timbaland & J-Roc, surely will be the show-stopping moment that Michael always was guaranteed to bring when on stage.

Personally, as a huge Michael Jackson fan, I'm all for the hologram. I'm not really a fan of the remixed "Slave to the Rhythm" track, but I attribute this to mostly the fact that I've had the original demo of the song in my iTunes for around four or five years now. After what felt like a million replays of the demo I had, I'm ready for actual unheard MJ music. The fact that 6 of the 8 tracks on the Xscape album were already floating around the internet for years, is kind of a slap to the face of true, diehard fans such as myself.

I seriously love the fact that MJ is back in the top 40 of the Billboard charts, having his songs in commercials, and the like.. So i'll stay optimistic to the upcoming plans from the Estate.

We'll see how Sunday goes.

Update: The performance... Yeah.

MJ's vision is forever vivid.

My Greatest Musical Inspirations

The king himself... He's the reason I make music today, my biggest inspiration. I swear there's an MJ song for every moment in life, that's what makes his music so amazing.
His genius will never be matched.
That's exactly why his visual is so vivid.

No words needed. "I'm not going to be able to change the world, I don't know how that's even possible.. But what I will do is be the spark for someone who will." That you are Mr. Shakur, that you are. R.I.P.
His Vision is forever vivid.

The best rapper alive... And in my opinion top 2 all time easily right next to Tupac (R.I.P.). He's also probably your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. Ranging from Lil B and Soulja Boy to Cornel West and Kanye West, everyone loves Lupe. What rapper you know who had their first ever album executive produced by Jay-Z, AND out rapped him on a song? I'll Wait...
His visual is vivid.

Self explanatory... Forget the fact that we share the same name and that people think (for whatever reason) that we resemble each other. He does it all... And I attribute the saving of mainstream hip-hop to him. I don't even have words to describe him, his music does the talking. When one of his songs are on you stop what you're doing and listen to his lyrical imagery and melodies, period.
His visual is definitely vivid.

J. Cole, a complete beast... One of the realest we have left in hip-hop and music period.
His vision is always vivid.

The kid is straight up dope... Plus he's where I strive to be, so I can only respect him. He must be doing something right to have all the haters he has. I don't care who his dad is, if you were in Diggy's situation wouldn't you use your resources to the fullest potential? I know I would.
His Visual is vivid.
